CHARACTER NAME: Shinn Asuka
CHARACTER AGE: 17
CANON: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
CANON POINT: Post-Freedom
CRAU INFO: N/A
SUITABILITY:
Has this character seen shit? Yes! Shinn had a lovely ordinary childhood. Then in the first five minutes of his show he sees his family blown to pieces during an invasion. He becomes a giant robot pilot to stop other people from going through the same thing, and winds up on the front lines of a second war – during which a space colony drop devastates the planet, a giant laser kills millions of space colony inhabitants, his bestie dies, a cute girl he promised to protect dies in his arms (while the entire city of Berlin burns down around them), he wanders around freaky laboratories filled with brains and corpses, he gets ordered to fight and kill former allies, people lie to and manipulate him, and he ultimately gets his butt handed to him by the protagonists of the previous series. Later, he signs up for an international peacekeeping force and barely escapes being hit by a nuclear warhead.
Can/will this character fight monsters in a team/mission-based setting? Yes!
In terms of skills, Shinn is an all-around handy combatant. His primary skill is piloting (particularly having sharp reflexes and going really really fast), but he graduated near the top of his military academy class with additional training in non-piloting combat skills. He’s also intensely hard working – when he struggles at the beginning of military training, he pesters his friends to do extra training with him and gets pummeled until he gets a handle on martial arts; when he decides that he’s going to take down the strongest pilot in the world, he holes up in his room with a teammate running simulations for days.
In terms of temperament, after watching his family get blown to pieces Shinn is intensely protective – to people he cares about, to strangers he runs into, and to the world in general. He wants to save other people from what he went through and firmly believes that it’s the job of people who choose to fight to enable ordinary people to keep living safe, peaceful lives. Shinn flourishes when he’s being relied upon, and if he’s sincerely told “I’m counting on you to keep people safe from superdimensional monsters” then he’ll pick up the nearest weapon and beat up on some monsters. Being protective doesn’t stop him from being a jerk, though – as one example, he sees a girl dance off a cliff, jumps into the ocean to save her, starts yelling at her for being an idiot as soon as she’s safe, then when she starts having a traumatized freakout very carefully calms her down and promises to protect her.
Shinn spends canon in a militia unit and then a peacekeeping force, so he’s comfortable with teams and on missions. However, he can be a pain in the ass to his command structure. First, he’s abrasive – he mouths off to superiors who he thinks lack conviction/capability and even gets snippy with his friends when he’s upset. Second, he periodically ignores orders that run counter to his sense of what’s right – he ignores a retreat signal to help a struggling unit in a tricky atmospheric re-entry, he strays off the battlefield to liberate a labor camp, he breaks an enemy pilot out of captivity to save her life (although he returns to duty immediately afterwards despite facing execution because he’s his ship’s only combat-capable pilot and he won’t leave his crew undefended). But he’s overall completely functional in team/mission settings, and both his attitude problems and inclination/capacity to cause trouble are well within the norm for a willful space opera protagonist. And once someone earns his loyalty, Shinn will be completely ride-or-die for them.

POWERS & SKILLS:
skills. Shinn’s greatest talent is that he’s a ludicrously amazing pilot. He also has militia training in non-robot combat (firearms, knives, hand-to-hand), investigation and infiltration, and engineering/programming adjacent to giant robot maintenance. At some point he did enough kendo to not die immediately in a non-giant-robot sword fight.
meta-human abilities. Shinn is a “Coordinator,” a genetically modified human. Coordinators are generally tweaked to be faster, stronger, quicker to learn, more durable, and healthier than ordinary people – more resistant both to communicable disease and stresses like extreme heat/heat/etc. Theoretically any Coordinator has the capacity to perform at peak-human levels in multiple areas if they put in appropriate effort, but at the end of the day the best Coordinators get beat by non-Coordinators who naturally hit the genetic lottery and/or work hard.
Among Coordinators, Shinn stands out for two things. First, he has uniquely fast reflexes and combat speed. Second, he has an uncommon genetic trait that can give him additional hyper-awareness during combat, although when his mental state is screwed up he gets stuck in berserker tunnel-vision instead. In this mental state, he’s not thinking normally (or possibly just isn’t thinking) and therefore can’t be mind-read by the type of psychic that exists in his canon.
psychic abilities, maybe? Shinn periodically shows signs of low-grade psychic abilities, but canon is unfortunately ambiguous about whether they’re his own abilities, someone else’s abilities, or just artsy representations of Shinn’s subconscious at work. I apologize if this section seems flippant, but canon really is unclear, and ultimately these maybe-powers are not a significant part of his character.
First, in the latest installment of canon, Shinn gets a psychic “ping” when his boss is in danger. For various canon-specific reasons (this ping is usually restricted to a different subset of characters, this ping usually triggers when the person with the ability is in trouble) this is probably his boss’s better-established psychic powers manifesting in a new way than Shinn developing a new ability.
Second, Shinn maybe-can-but-maybe-can’t astral project and/or talk to ghosts. He briefly makes out-of-body contact with an enemy pilot in the middle of a fight, later has a conversation with the same woman’s maybe-ghost while he’s unconscious, and even later the same woman’s maybe-ghost shows up to protect him against a psychic attack that involved controlling negative emotions. But Shinn doesn’t show conscious awareness that these things are happening, and canon is frankly unclear whether there’s actual psychic powers at work (and, if so, whether the power is Shinn’s or the dead girl’s?) or whether this is just an artsy way to show Shinn’s subconscious. The only clear thing is that Shinn has some level of resistance to psychic attacks based on controlling negative emotions.
NERFED POWERS: I’m taking nerfs to the psychic abilities not because they’re gamebreaking but because canon is ambiguous. If mods ever need someone to be receptive to a psychic heads-up or see a ghost then Shinn is a decent candidate, but canon is too ambiguous for these to be active/generally-usable abilities.
First, although I’m not nerfing the “danger ping” completely, I am limiting it to “when boss-character is in danger, if anyone ever apps boss-character,” because, as mentioned above, I think this is a manifestation of boss-character’s powers rather than Shinn’s. If anyone apps boss-character and disagrees, I’ll take a total nerf on the ping.
Second, I’d like to keep Shinn as having some level of protection against psychic attacks based on manipulating negative emotions (the part that clearly exists), but not have it expressly be based on a ghost living in his subconscious (the part that’s ambiguous).
PERSONAL ITEM: Following what I understand to be the convention for mechs, a scaled-to-ten-feet and nerfed-to-30% Destiny Gundam Spec II. tl;dr of the Wiki: flying, big sword, big gun, some smaller swords and guns and other sharp objects, can shoot a recharge beam to power allied units.
Two things the mod team may or may not want to nerf:
- First, Destiny’s unique gimmick is going really really fast by spewing pink sparkle-particles. The combination of going really really fast and spewing pink sparkle-particles lets Destiny create afterimages that look like clones. They are not actually clones, they’re just optical illusions. I’m indifferent on whether the afterimages ability gets nerfed.
- Second, Destiny Gundam has an internal nuclear power source. If the mods OOCly or LILITH ICly wouldn’t want a nuclear power source lying around, I’ll take a battery-based nerf.
ALTERNATE IDENTITY: Shimon Izuna, motorcycle delivery driver. Full disclosure, the name is a dumb metajoke: there’s a show about fighting with toy Gundams, in which Shimon Izuna is a minor opponent-of-the-week who uses Shinn’s Destiny Gundam. I have never seen Shimon RP’d and I’m completely confident he’s not appable. But if using another character’s name crosses a line, swap that name out for Simon Isuzu.
CODE NAME CHOICE: justish. Because [@]destiny is taken and Shinn did a stint piloting a Justice Gundam variant.
